Sompal bowls Nepal to victory over Melbourne Renegades

Kathmandu: A sensational spell from pacer Sompal Kami powered Nepal to a 33-run win over Melbourne Renegades Academy (MRA) on Wednesday, sealing their second consecutive victory in the Top End Twenty20 Series at Cazalys Arena, Palmerston, Australia.

Opting to bat first, Nepal posted a modest 139-9, before bowling out MRA for 106 runs in 20 overs, thanks to Sompal’s match-winning figures of 5-17 from four overs.

This triumph followed Nepal’s emphatic 66-run win over Hobart Hurricanes Academy on Tuesday, which came after a string of three defeats—a 42-run loss to Northern Territory Strike in the opener on Friday, a 32-run setback to Bangladesh ‘A’ on Saturday, and a 31-run defeat against Melbourne Stars Academy on Monday. Nepal next face Pakistan Shaheens on Friday.

Defending what looked a chaseable total, Nepal struck at regular intervals, with Sompal at the forefront. He bowled opener Dylan Brasher for just two runs, before removing MRA’s top scorer Arjun Nair (26 off 22) as the sixth wicket in the 16th over. He then trapped Fergus O’Neill lbw off the very next ball for a golden duck.

The player-of-the-match went on to dismiss Harry Hoekstra (11), caught by Shahab Alam, and Callum Stow (0), taken by Kushal Bhurtel. He was also involved in the run-out of Jai Lemire (18 off 21), while opener Harry Dixon (16) was among the few to reach double digits.

Kushal Bhurtel supported with 2-20 in four overs, while Shahab Alam and Rupesh Singh chipped in with one wicket each.

Earlier, Kushal Malla (29 off 22) top-scored for Nepal, followed by Dipendra Singh Airee (27 off 28) and a late flourish from tailender Lokesh Bam (24 off 16). Other contributions came from Bhim Sharki (17), Rupesh Singh (16 not out), and Aarif Sheikh (12).

For MRA, bowlers Fergus O’Neill, Callum Stow, Lachlan Bangs, and Michael Archer shared two wickets each.
