Kathmandu: Nepal secured another emphatic victory over Sri Lanka, thrashing them 7–0 for the second time in the SAFF U-20 Women’s Championship in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Thursday.
Samikshya Magar and Kusum Khatiwada netted two goals each, while Purnima Rai, Sarita Kumari Nath, and Birsana Chaudhary also found the back of the net. Nepal’s tally was further boosted by an own goal from Sri Lanka.
Nepal dominated from the onset, scoring four goals in the first half and adding three more in the second. The result mirrors their first-leg clash with Sri Lanka, where Nepal also registered a 7–0 win.
With this victory, Nepal sit second in the standings with nine points from four matches, having suffered a narrow 3–2 defeat to defending champions Bangladesh in their previous meeting. Bangladesh currently tops the table with nine points from four matches and could extend their lead by three points if they beat Bhutan in Thursday’s late fixture.
The tournament is being held in a double round-robin format and features four South Asian teams including hosts Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. India, Pakistan, and the Maldives did not participate in the tournament. The team finishing at the top of the table will be crowned champions.
Nepal had previously defeated Bhutan 6–1 in their first-leg encounter. They will face Bhutan again on Saturday, followed by a crucial rematch against Bangladesh on July 29.
