Kathmandu: The second international friendly football match between Nepal and Bangladesh has been cancelled due to the ongoing political turmoil in Kathmandu, where at least 19 people were reported to be killed during protests on Monday.
The two sides were scheduled to meet on Tuesday at Dasharath Stadium in the second of a two-match series. Their first encounter on Saturday had ended in a goalless draw.
“Considering the current situation, the match between Nepal and Bangladesh scheduled for Tuesday has been cancelled. We sincerely apologise to all football supporters for the inconvenience caused,” the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) said in a statement on Monday evening.
Protests by Gen Z demonstrators erupted across the country on Monday against the government’s recent social media ban and widespread corruption. The demonstrations turned violent after protesters stormed the parliament building in New Baneshwar, Kathmandu.
According to multiple media reports, police opened fire on demonstrators, leaving at least 19 people dead nationwide.
