Cricketing icon Faf du Plessis joins Biratnagar Kings for NPL 2

Kathmandu: The Biratnagar Kings have announced the signing of legendary South African cricketer Faf du Plessis for the second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), scheduled to take place from November 17 to December 30.

In a press statement, the franchise confirmed the acquisition of the 41-year-old batting powerhouse for the upcoming tournament. It remains uncertain, however, whether Du Plessis will participate for the entire season or feature in select matches.

“That will depend on the official fixture list. We’re waiting for the schedule to be released so that he can align it with his calendar,” said Dipendra Chaudhary, Director of Biratnagar Kings.

A former captain of South Africa across all three formats — Tests, ODIs, and T20Is — Du Plessis has been a key figure in global franchise cricket. He was instrumental in Chennai Super Kings’ IPL triumphs in 2018 and 2021, earning the Player of the Match award in the 2021 final for his blistering 59-ball 86.

More recently, Du Plessis led the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for three consecutive seasons (2022–2024) and has been picked by Delhi Capitals for the 2025 IPL season, where he will also serve as vice-captain.

“Having a world-class player like Faf du Plessis join us is a moment of immense pride for Biratnagar Kings and for the NPL as a whole. His presence will not only elevate Nepal’s profile on the global cricketing map but also encourage more international stars to take part in the league,” added Chaudhary.

Throughout his illustrious career, Du Plessis has represented South Africa in 69 Tests, 143 ODIs, and 50 T20Is, scoring centuries across all formats — 10 in Tests, 12 in ODIs, and one in T20Is.

The second edition of the NPL features eight teams. Janakpur Bolts are the defending champions while Biratnagar Kings made an exit from group stage in the inaugural edition.
