Nepal clinch 16-run victory over Netherlands to wrap up Tri-Series

Kathmandu: Nepal wrapped up Scotland Tri-Series of the ICC World Cup League 2 with an entertaining 16-run victory over the Netherlands at Forthill, Dundee on Tuesday.

After being sent in to bat, Nepal posted 236-9 in the allotted 50 overs. In response, the Dutch side were bowled out for 230 with just four balls remaining, thanks to three-wicket hauls from ODI debutant Nandan Yadav and leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.

The win marked Nepal’s third in the series. They defeated the Netherlands twice, while splitting their two matches against hosts Scotland—winning one and losing one.

With the outcome, Nepal remained second from the bottom in the eight-team standings, with 12 points from 16 matches. The United States top the table with 28 points from 20 games, followed by the Netherlands, who have 26 points from 23 games.

Nepal made a few changes to their lineup for the match. Anil Sah opened the innings in place of regular opener Aasif Sheikh. Key players Sompal Kami and Gulsan Jha were sidelined due to injuries, making way for Basir Ahmad and debutant Nandan Yadav.

Nepal made a shaky start to their innings, losing both openers early. Kushal Bhurtel scored 18 and Anil Sah managed just 2, leaving the team at 29-2. Bhim Sharki and skipper Rohit Paudel followed with identical scores of 35. Bhim’s innings included three boundaries in 64 balls, while Rohit’s knock featured a six from 70 deliveries.

Middle order batter Aarif Sheikh gave a much needed stability for Nepal with a composed 84 off 85 balls, including seven boundaries and two sixes. The player-of-the-match was bowled by Roelof van der Merwe in the last over.

Dipendra Singh Airee (16), Basir Ahmad and Karan KC (11 runs each) contributed for Nepal while Nandan Yadav remained unbeaten on 10.

Paul van Meekeren was the standout bowler for Nepal claiming 4 wickets conceding 58 runs in his 10 overs spell. Michael Levitt supported well, taking 3-49 in his 10-over bowling.

Nepal were controversially penalised 10 runs for alleged repeated running into the protected area of the pitch by Aarif Sheikh.

In their chase, the Netherlands lost opener Max O’Dowd early for just 4 runs, caught by Lalit Rajbanshi off Nandan. Fellow opener Michael Levitt was trapped leg-before by Sandeep Lamichhane.

Wesley Barresi top-scored for the Dutch with 36 off 60 balls, including three boundaries. Captain Scott Edwards (30), Kyle Klein (25), Noah Croes (22), Teja Nidamanuru (17), and Roelof van der Merwe (16) also made notable contributions but fell short of the target.

Nandan Yadav impressed on debut with figures of 9-1-39-3 while Sandeep returned with 3-39 from his 10 overs.

Nepal, the Netherlands, and Scotland will now turn their attention to the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I Series, scheduled to be held in Glasgow next week.
