Nepal thump Italy in Women’s Challenge Trophy

Kathmandu: Nepal registered a commanding 50-run victory over Italy in their second match of the ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 at Gahanga ‘B’ Ground in Rwanda on Monday.

Opting to bat first, Nepal posted 112-8, powered by an unbeaten 48 from vice-captain Puja Mahato. In response, Italy were bowled out for 62 in 18.4 overs, with Rubina Chhetry leading the charge by claiming four wickets.

Nepal had suffered a 44-run defeat against the United States in their opening match on Saturday.

Batting at No. 3, Mahato anchored the innings with a composed 45-ball knock, hitting two fours and a six. Openers Bindu Rawal (15 off 26) and Samjhana Khadka (16 off 15) provided a steady start, both striking two boundaries each before being dismissed.

Captain Indu Barma (10) was the only other Nepali batter to reach double figures.

For Italy, Emilia Bartram was the standout bowler, returning figures of 3-21 in her three overs.

Chasing 113, Italy struggled to build momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals. Middle order Chathurika Mahamalage top-scored with an unbeaten 22 off 46 balls, including a boundary, while Pasindi Kanankega (12) was the only other batter to reach double digits.

Player of the match Rubina delivered an exceptional spell, taking four wickets for just four runs in 2.4 overs, including a maiden. Kabita Kunwar chipped in with two wickets.

The five-team tournament — featuring hosts Rwanda, the United States, Nepal, Italy and Vanuatu — is being played in a double round-robin format.

Nepal will face Rwanda in their third match on Wednesday.
