Kathmandu: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward No. 10 is set to organise the second edition of the KMC-10 Ward Chairperson Cup Nationwide Open FIDE Rapid Rating Chess Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.

The event, to be held with the technical support of Thapathali Park Chess Club, will take place at Krishna Bhog Party Palace, tournament director Indra Kumar Basnet said at a press conference.

The event will be conducted under the Swiss League system and offers a total cash purse of Rs252,500. Around 250 players are expected to participate in the tournament.

The top 20 players in the open category will share the cash prize, with Rs26,250 going to the winner and Rs22,500 to the runner-up.

The winners in the women’s, unrated, veteran (above 55 years), under-14, under-12 and under-10 age categories, as well as players rated below 1900, 1800, 1700, 1600 and 1500, and the best local players from Ward No. 10, will also receive cash prizes.

The expected cost of the tournament is Rs1 million.

According to Sanu Raj Bajracharya, president of Thapathali Park Chess Club, the club will manage all the equipment for the tournament, along with the technical manpower.
