Gorkhali retains Fifteens Rugby trophy

Kathmandu: Holders Gorkhali Rugby Club retained the fifth edition of the Fifteens Rugby Championship 2025 at Chyasal Stadium on Tuesday.

Gorkhali secured a commanding 55-0 victory over Nepal Police Club in the final league match to clinch the trophy winning all three matches.

In another match, Tribhuvan Army Club defeated Nepal APF  Club 19-7 to finish runners up. APF, the runners up of last edition, settled for third position while Nepal Police Club failed to score any points in the tournament.

Champions Gorkhali Rugby received a cash prize of Rs222,222 and the runners up  Tribhuvan Army walked up with Rs111,111.

Member Secretary of the National Sports Council (NSC) Tanka Lal Ghising, NSC member Kamal Bhattarai, Nepal Rugby Association senior vice president Chetan Raj Giri and general secretary Govinda Ghimire distributed prizes to the winners.

Bijay Khadka of Gorkhali Rugby Club was named best player and won Rs15,000.

Having already defeated two of the tougher opponents — APF and Tribhuvan Army — Gorkhali faced a comparatively weak opponent on Tuesday. Gorkhali led 40-0 by halftime in the one sided affair.

They even fielded several second choice players in the starting lineup. As expected Gorkhali took firm control of the game from the start. The team added another 15 points in the second half, while Police failed to open the scoring.

The event organized by Nepal Rugby Association was played in the round-robin league format and saw participation of four teams including three departmental teams and Gorkhali Rugby.

According to the Nepal Rugby Association, a national team will be picked on the basis of the players performance in the league for Nepal vs Bangladesh Fifteens to be held in Kathmandu in a couple of months.
