Kathmandu: Nepal recorded a commanding 8–0 win over Sri Lanka to maintain their perfect run in Group ‘F’ of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers, inspired by a first-half hat-trick from captain Sabitra Bhandari in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Wednesday.
The back-to-back victories following Sunday’s 9–0 thrashing of Laos—moved Nepal a step closer to realising their dream of qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup finals scheduled for next year in Australia.
Nepal provisionally top the standings with six points from two matches. Hosts Uzbekistan, who were set to face Laos later in the evening, sit second with three points and could overtake Nepal if they manage an eight-goal winning margin. Only the group winners will secure a berth in the finals.
Alongside Sabitra’s heroics, Geeta Rana struck twice, while Nisha Thokar and substitutes Rekha Paudel and Puja Rana also found the net. Veteran midfielder Anita Basnet delivered a standout performance with three assists.

Geeta opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a free header in a corner taken by Anita. Sabitra, who was appointed captain in the previous match, doubled the advantage soon after applying a one-touch finish to convert Anita’s cut-back pass.
Sabitra added her second three minutes before halftime, tapping in Rashmi Ghising’s precise cut-back. She completed her hat-trick in the first half stoppage time with a free header from a Sabita Rana Magar cross, giving Nepal a commanding 4–0 lead at the break.
It was Sabitra’s second consecutive hat-trick of the tournament—having netted four goals in the opener against Sri Lanka—and she extended her record tally for Nepal to 64 international goals.
Early in the second half, Nepal were awarded a penalty after a Sri Lankan defender brought down Rashmi inside the box, and Geeta calmly converted. In the 62nd minute, Nisha Thokar scored her first international goal, heading in Anita’s corner.
Substitute Rekha Paudel made it 7–0 in the 78th minute with a header from Puja Rana’s pinpoint delivery. One minute before full time, Puja capped the rout by finding the net herself.
Nepal will face hosts Uzbekistan in their final and decisive group fixture on Saturday.
