Nepal, Uzbekistan face off for historic Women’s Asian Cup berth

Kathmandu: Nepal and hosts Uzbekistan stand just one step away from realising their Asian Cup aspirations as they face off in a decisive AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers clash in Tashkent on Saturday evening.

The winner of this do-or-die encounter will secure a historic berth in their first-ever Asian Cup finals, to be held next year in Australia—an achievement neither side has reached since the qualifying rounds were introduced in 2005.

The performances and results from the previous two matches in Group ‘F’ point to an evenly poised contest. Both teams have amassed six points from two emphatic victories apiece, scoring 17 goals each without conceding a single one.

Nepal swept past Laos 9-0 and routed Sri Lanka 8-0, while Uzbekistan dismantled Sri Lanka 10-0 and overcame Laos 7-0.

On paper, Uzbekistan enter as favourites. Ranked 51st in the FIFA rankings, they will enjoy home advantage over Nepal, who sit at 100th globally. But in football, current form, tactical discipline, and determination often matter more than statistics.

A victory could usher in a new era for Nepal’s women’s football, which has yet to secure a major trophy. Uzbekistan, too, are aiming to make history, inspired by their men’s team qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time. Like Nepal, they have not appeared in the Asian Cup finals since 2005.

The match is expected to be a genuine test for both sides, whose defensive lines and goalkeepers have remained largely unchallenged so far.

Nepal’s newly appointed Belgian coach, Patrick De Wilde, has reshaped the squad over the past two matches, introducing significant changes to the starting lineup and shifting to an aggressive system with three defenders and five midfielders.

Nepal have looked heavily reliant on star forward and newly appointed captain Sabitra Bhandari, who has netted seven goals across the two fixtures. She will likely face tight marking from the Uzbek defense, making it imperative for the coach to devise alternative attacking strategies should Bhandari be contained.
