ANFA suspends all football activities

Kathmandu: The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has suspended all on-field football activities, including the ANFA Women’s Club Championship and the ANFA U-16 Youth Championship.

The Martyrs Memorial ‘A’ Division Football League, initially proposed to kick off between December and January, also faces a likely postponement.

ANFA had scheduled a meeting with top-tier clubs on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming ‘A’ Division League. However, the football governing body notified all clubs that the meeting has been deferred until further notice due to “technical reasons.”

ANFA spokesperson Suresh Shah stated that the meeting was intended to discuss the proposed Martyrs Memorial ‘A’ Division League, which was being planned for the December–January window.

“We decided to postpone the meeting in light of the tragic incidents during the recent Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9. It was also not an ideal time for district delegates to travel to Kathmandu,” said Shah. He added that ANFA had invited representatives from district football associations to discuss a proposed home-and-away league format.

ANFA had been in talks with top-tier clubs to organise this season’s ‘A’ Division League across 14 venues nationwide. However, with the meeting now postponed indefinitely, the likelihood of the league taking place in the proposed timeframe appears slim.

Nepal’s top-flight league has already been on hold for more than two years. The last edition was held from March to June 2023.

ANFA has also postponed the ongoing U-16 Youth League and the ANFA Women’s Club Championship, which was scheduled to begin on September 17. Both postponements have been attributed to the current situation in the country.

The Women’s Championship was expected to determine Nepal’s representative for the SAFF Women’s Club Championship, scheduled to take place later this year.
