Army crowned women’s hockey champions

Kathmandu: Tribhuvan Army Club claimed the women’s trophy in the National Hockey Tournament maintaining their cent percent winning streak on Monday.

The departmental giants pulled off a convincing 3-0 victory over Gandaki Province in their last league match, a virtual final at the Chyasal Football Stadium.

The outcome meant Army wrapped up the tournament on maximum nine points winning all three matches in the four-team contest held under round robin format. Gandaki bowed out with six points finishing runners up.

Damara Bhatt scored twice for Army and Sita Maya Bal added. Damara was named player-of-the-match.

Madhesh Province came third with three points after a hard fought 1-0 win over Bagmati Province, thanks to a lone goal from Bhawana Rai. The top three teams received cash prizes of Rs75,000, Rs50,000 and Rs25,000 respectively.

Neelima Pandey of champions Army was named the best player of the tournament while Khushbu Kumari from Madhesh was declared the emerging player. Gadaki and layers Anisha Thapa Magar won best goalkeeper and Sonu Baral best defender awards. Kamala Chand of Army won the highest scorer award with five goals under her belt. Each of them received Rs5,000.

Men’s semi-finalists finalised

In the National Men’s event, Army will vie against departmental rivals Nepal APF Club while Gandaki will play against Nepal Police Club in the semifinals.

Nepal Police defeated Bagmati 2–0 riding on twin goals by Shankar Gharti Maga who was later adjudged the player-of-the-match.

Tournament debutants APF  beat Karnali Province 1–0, thanks to a decisive goal by Saroj Kumar Gole. The scorer was named player-of-the-match.

Gandaki eliminated Madhesh with a 3–0 victory. Deepak Tamang scored two goals and Kushal Nepali added another . Both semifinal matches will be played on Tuesday.
