Women’s National Rugby Sevens on Monday

Kathmandu: Martyrs Memorial Sports Academy is set to organise the Martyrs Memorial National Rugby Sevens Women’s Championships at the Dasharath Stadium on Monday. 

The event to be organised under management and technical assistance of Nepal Rugby Association will see participation of seven teams, said Deepa Adhikari, the coordinator of the Championship and treasurer of Nepal Rugby Association at a press conference on Friday. 

Five provincial teams – Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Karnali and Sudurpaschim – and two departmental sides – Tribhuvan Army Club and Nepal APF Sports Club – will compete in the event. The Championships will be held in the league cum knockout format after dividing them into two groups

“Gandaki and Lumbini did not participate in the event due to lack of preparation,” said Adhikari. 

Adhikari also informed that they have formed Nepal School Rugby Commission in all seven provinces of the country and were conducting regular training in different schools with the view to develop the game from grassroot level. 

The expected cost of the event is Rs1.9 million out of which Martyrs Memorial Sports Academy will provide a purse of Rs1.1 million and Rugby Association will bear remaining cost from its internal resources. 

The winners and runners up teams will get cash prize of Rs100,000 and Rs50,000 respectively along with trophies, medals and certificates. The best player of the tournament will get Rs7,000.

According to Bal Kumar KC, the treasurer of the Martyrs Memorial Sports Academy, they would organise national level sports events of four games this fiscal year including rugby, badminton, taekwondo and futsal under coordination with respective sports associations.
